There are some important things that you can do to help yourself get the best score possible on the Ohio 5th Grade Reading Achievement test. Here are some hot tips!

Before you read, skim across the title, pictures, and any sub-headings.

  1. Before you begin to read each selection, look at the title and the picture. Think what the selection is probably about, and make a prediction in your head. Decide if the selection is most likely fiction or non-fiction. Is there a word bank? If so, READ THE WORD BANK!

Read carefully, thinking about what is important.

  1. Begin reading the passage carefully. At the end of each paragraph, ask yourself what was important in the paragraph. Summarize it in your head. If you aren’t sure, just re-read the paragraph and try again.

When you are finished reading the selection, read it again!

  1. When you are finished reading a selection once, read it again! If you read it twice, it will make more sense, and help you understand what the author is telling you.

Go on to the questions, and read each one all the way through.

  1. Now go to the questions. Read each question completely. Think about what the question is asking you to do. (RTD2!) Underline or circle the parts of the question that tell you what to do. There is often more than one thing you have to do, so make sure you have maked each thing you must do to answer the question fully.

Go back to the test and find your answer(s).

  1. When you go back to the text to find the answer or support, first find some key words in the question that you can skim the selection for. Remember, once you locate the key words in the text, you may need to read above and below the key words to find the answer.

Use QIA (Question in Answer) to begin writing your answer, then write a complete response.

  1. As you start writing your answer, begin with words from the question. That will help you make sure your response is on topic! Complete your answer by writing a full response to all parts of the question.

When you are finished writing your answer, re-read what you wrote!

  1. When you are finished writing your answer, re-read it! (RRWYW!) Ask yourself these questions:

· Does my answer respond to the actual question being asked?

· Does my answer make sense?

· Did I use the story to get the correct spelling of big words?

· Is my answer complete? Did it answer all parts of the question?

When you are finished with a selection, make sure you have answered everything!

  1. When you are finished with the test, check it over very carefully to make sure that you answered every question! If there is a question you can’t figure out, give it your very best and write something down. Don’t leave anything blank!

Good Luck!
