What is Nanotechnology?

  • Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. Nanotechnology is not just a new field of science and engineering, but a new way of looking at and studying (Nano.gov)

          1 nanometer = 1 billionth of a meter

Word World: Carbon Nanotubes!

Did you know that...

  • carbon nanotubes can help by making things stronger, yet also smaller and lighter, from space gear to computer chips to tennis rackets to coatings on surfaces of different materials!

  • nanotechnology can make space travel less expensive?

  • there are lots of products being developed using nanotechnology?

  • researchers are working with cancer medicine delivery using nanospheres called bucky balls?

  • nanotechnology is used to make stainless fabric?

Mail Call: Self Assembly

  • Self Assembly: What is it? Molecular self-assembly is the assembly of molecules without guidance or management from an outside source.

  • Nature has been self-assembling for years -- snowflakes, for example.

  • Self Assembly Video (fun!)
