Did you know...

  • Earth rotates (spins) on its axis once every 24 hours.

  • Earth revolves (goes around) the sun once every 365.25 days.

  • The closed path that the Earth takes around the sun is called an orbit. The shape of the orbit is an ellipse (oval, egg-shaped).

  • Earth is tilted on its axis by 23.5 degrees. This is what causes seasons. When the North Pole is pointing towards the sun, the Northern Hemisphere is getting more direct rays, and it is having summer while the Southern Hemisphere is having winter. When the South Pole is pointing towards the sun, it is just the opposite.

  • The most important differences between the Moon and the Earth is that the Earth has liquid water and atmosphere.

  • As the Moon orbits Earth, we can see different amounts of the Moon's lighted side. Because of this, the Moon's shape appears to change from day to day in a predictable way. We call the Moon's cycle of changes the phases of the Moon.

  • As we see a bit more of its lighted side each night, we say the Moon is waxing.

  • As we see a bit less of its lighted side each night, we say the Moon is waning.

  • The gravity of the Moon causes tides.
