Carlisle's Robotics Teams
advance to district competition!
Contamination Hotshots - Regional Tournament Champions
Cookie Pirates - Regional Robot Design and Robot Performance Winners

The
5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Carlisle Hotshots Robotics teams had a
blast working to meet the demands of the 2011 FIRST LEGO League Food
Factor Challenge. On November 12th they competed at the Springboro
Regional FLL Tournament with 12 teams from Springboro, Oakwood
Junior High, Miamisburg, and Benjamin Logan Middle School. The teams
were interviewed and judged in three areas:
-
Project -
This year's project was improving food safety
(preventing/eliminating food contamination). They had to provide
evidence that they had completed the requirements for their
research, experts, field trips, food journey, problem/solution,
presentation, and sharing with the community.
-
Core Values -
FLL embraces "gracious professionalism", team work, discovery,
collaboration with experts, and fun among other goals for teams.
-
Robot - FLL
judges interview the teams, hear their Robot Design Executive
Summary, and review the overall technical aspects of game
mission strategies and programming.
Finally, the teams
compete at the tables for the high-spirited Robot Games! The robots
have two and a half minutes to complete missions on the challenge
mat, earning points for all they are able to accomplish in that
time. The rules are very specific, and the missions all had
something to do with keeping food safe, such as pest removal,
pollution reversal, disinfect, storage temperature, and so on.
The attending teams were
all challenged to accomplish a lot of work quickly because this tournament
was scheduled weeks earlier than Regionals in years past. All the
teams came together sharing a friendly spirit, exchanging ideas, and
focusing on a fun
day with others who had taken the same challenge. It was exciting to
see all the research and clever solutions they had come up
with for a safer food supply!
Congratulations goes out
to both Carlisle teams for being recognized during the awards
ceremony. The Contamination Hotshots earned the title of "Tournament
Champions". The Cookie Pirates had the high score in the Robot Games
and earned the "Robot Performance" and "Robot Design" trophies. The
best news is that the season will continue for them: they both
earned invitations to compete at district competition in January!

Many people need a major
THANK YOU for the roles they have played in helping the teams get to
this point. Please join us in thanking them:
-
Mr. Brian Dalton - ServSafe
expert mentor, for introducing the framework of food safety in
restaurants; also for serving as a tournament chaperone!
-
Dr. Roger Kimmel - Research
and team mentor, for working with robotics team members over the
past several years in thinking about research, asking probing
questions in problem/solution and technical areas, for coach
support; also for serving as a tournament chaperone!
-
Dr. Dan Michael - Warren
County Educational Service Center Science Consultant, for
inspiring the Hotshots with a demonstration of the use of
ultra-violet light and information about irradiation
-
Mrs. Lois Hofer - Food
Service Director for Carlisle and Valley View Schools, for
taking the teams on a "field trip" through the food preparation
areas while discussing the requirements of the health department
and inspectors and for providing handouts to enjoy and learn
from as well.
-
Mrs. Lyndsay Griffin - Miami
Valley CTC Food Science Tech Teacher, for her discussions about
food safety/science careers, for leading the hand-washing
experiments which revealed it takes more than a cursory splash
of soap and water to really get the bacteria off your hands, and
for showing pictures of food safety violations which the teams
then had to identify.
-
Mrs. Aimee Bowser - Coach
support, pep rally coordinator, and tournament chaperone
extraordinaire. She made sure everyone got where they needed to
go, including the coach, and made sure the kids all had
something to eat during a hectic schedule!
-
Mrs. Alicia Patrick -
Supportive parent, pep rally support, and for providing a
pre-packed lunch on tournament day for the teams. She has also
offered to head up our upcoming fundraising project.

parent, for providing granola bars and water for the morning of
the tournament.
-
Mrs. Wendy Kimmel -
Supportive parent, for transporting Contamination Hotshot's lead
programmer, Chris, to an advanced programming workshop in
Dublin, Ohio, on a school night. Chris came back from that
workshop and shared what he had learned, allowing both teams to
evolve and enjoy their new skills using Bluetooth technologies.
-
Mr. Jeff Rosenbalm -
Supportive parent, for the awesome LEGO cake at our pep rally.
-
Mrs. Janese Griffin -

-
Mrs. Stacy Lipps -
Intermediate School Teacher, for letting us spread out and use
her room for project and presentation work during each of our
practices.
-
Faye Shumard - Carlisle
Schools custodian, for working around all our practices in her
cleaning schedule, and making sure we didn't leave LEGOs on the
floor for the sweeper!
-
Carlisle Local School District
