Back to School.
Hello! We are already back in the swing of things in our 5th grade
classroom! Students are already showing they know how to have a respectful,
responsible, and productive experience every day at school. What a great
start!
-
Book Covers. All school books need to
be covered by Monday, September 12th. The books are too heavy to bring
home all at once, so I recommend bringing home one or two a night. The
stretchy cloth ones are probably both the best and the easiest. Stick-on
book covers are not allowed.
-
Papers.
Thanks to everyone who has turned in those back-to-school district
papers and forms! I will be sending out my classroom forms this week,
including "Classroom
Policies",
"Internet Release Forms",
"Getting to Know Your Child", and "Homework
Detention Policy" letters/forms.
-
Homework. Wow! So far, so good. Your
children are doing a great job being responsible for their homework!
Thanks for all you do at home to support your child's success at school.

Newsletters and Website. Throughout
the year I will update parents and students by online newsletters. I
will also recommend websites for connecting with what we are studying.
Parents are responsible for their child's safe use of the Internet. I
make every effort to list kid-friendly websites, however I do not have
editorial control of those sites nor the ads that sometimes make their
way onto them. A good recommendation is to keep your computer in an area
of the house where you can monitor what your child is doing. Talk with
your child about safety online.
Math.
We jumped into Math these first few days by taking math facts tests, and studying arrays, factors,
and the commutative property of addition and multiplication. Timed math facts tests will be
given throughout the year, 100 problems in three minutes. Students
must have their
facts memorized in order to be successful with the more complex math
computations and fractions concepts they will be learning in 5th grade.
We go to the computer lab every day except Wednesdays to get some rapid
fire practice with them on "Turbo Math Facts Game'. We have also been
enjoying BrainPop and Multiplication.com as we discovered we can use the
commutative property to reduce the number of facts we need to memorize.

Science.
We checked out our Science textbook and found that there are many
familiar topics from 3rd and 4th grade, plus a lot of new topics for 5th
grade. For the first time since they started school, students will be
tested by the state in science. That test will cover all three years of
science instruction: 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Our first unit this year covers
life science. We will focus on the flow of energy through food webs,
starting with photosynthesis.
